Some retina and optic nerve diseases that may lead to vision loss still have limited treatment options today, making supportive therapies aimed at preserving existing vision increasingly important.

Many retinal and optic nerve disorders, particularly those with genetic or progressive characteristics, cannot always be completely cured. For this reason, treatments that focus on protecting current visual function and slowing disease progression play a critical role in patient care.

Assoc. Prof. Uğur Ünsal, an Ophthalmology Specialist at Batıgöz Health Group Çankaya Clinic, says the MagnoVision electromagnetic stimulation and iontophoresis therapy offers a supportive approach for such conditions where treatment options are limited.

What is MagnoVision?

MagnoVision is a medical device designed to target the retina, optic nerve, and visual pathways using electromagnetic stimulation combined with iontophoresis. No electrodes touch the eye directly, and no electrical current is applied to ocular tissues, making the procedure non-invasive.

During treatment, patients wear a specially designed headset for approximately 30 minutes and can return to daily activities immediately afterward.

Supporting communication between nerve cells

According to Assoc. Prof. Ünsal, MagnoVision works through two primary mechanisms:

Neuromodulation: Electromagnetic fields help support communication balance between nerve cells in the retina and optic nerve, potentially contributing to improved transmission of visual signals to the brain.

Iontophoresis: This mechanism facilitates the delivery of therapeutic agents and growth factors to hard-to-reach tissues such as the retina, distinguishing MagnoVision from conventional supportive treatments.

Through these mechanisms, the therapy may help support blood circulation in the retina and optic nerve, enhance cellular energy production, and strengthen synaptic transmission.

Facilitating delivery of growth factors to retinal tissue

MagnoVision is used as a supportive treatment option in several progressive or treatment-resistant eye conditions, including:

  • Retinitis pigmentosa

  • Optic neuropathies

  • Chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR)

  • Retinal ischemia and deep capillary circulation disorders

  • Serous retinal pigment epithelium detachment

  • Myopic choroidal neovascularization (CNV)

Although some of these conditions are commonly described as “untreatable,” supportive therapies aim to slow disease progression, preserve existing vision, and achieve functional improvements in selected patients.

May enhance the effectiveness of PRP and stem cell therapies

MagnoVision therapy can be combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell treatments.

PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood and contains more than 30 growth factors, including NGF, BDNF, IGF, PDGF, and VEGF. For retinal conditions, studies emphasize that PRP should be prepared using cooled centrifugation and delivered to target tissues through the iontophoresis effect of MagnoVision.

When used alongside stem cell applications, the goal is to support regenerative processes at the cellular level.

Considered safe with no serious reported side effects

Clinical studies and real-world applications of MagnoVision have not reported serious side effects requiring treatment discontinuation. The procedure is considered safe and well tolerated in terms of patient comfort.

Assoc. Prof. Ünsal noted:
“Even in eye diseases often described as having ‘no treatment,’ we can now talk about supportive options. MagnoVision aims to provide cellular-level support without causing side effects. However, suitability must always be determined through a detailed individual evaluation.”
