5 ways to deal with fatigue during pregnancy

BY BİLGE TÜRK | MEDICENTERT TV

ANTALYA, TÜRKİYE —  Most expectant mothers experience significant fatigue during their first and third trimesters, but medical experts suggest that strategic lifestyle adjustments can significantly improve comfort and daily functioning.

While exhaustion is a common hallmark of the journey toward motherhood, it can often negatively impact a woman's quality of life. According to Op. Dr. Murat Alpay from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Memorial Health Group Medstar Antalya Hospital, taking specific precautions under medical supervision can make the process much more comfortable.

Primary causes of prenatal exhaustion

Fatigue during pregnancy is rarely tied to a single factor; rather, it is the result of several simultaneous physiological shifts. Dr. Murat Alpay identifies the following as the most influential drivers:

  • Hormonal Shifts: Increasing levels of progesterone act as a natural muscle relaxant, which often leads to a persistent feeling of tiredness.

  • Increased Blood Volume: To support fetal development, the body produces more blood, forcing the circulatory system to work significantly harder.

  • Metabolic Demands: The body’s energy requirements spike during pregnancy, leading to faster exhaustion if not properly managed.

  • Iron Deficiency: Pregnancy increases the risk of anemia, which is one of the most common medical causes of extreme fatigue.

5 golden rules to manage fatigue

While most fatigue is normal, experts recommend five specific lifestyle changes to help maintain energy levels throughout the day.

  1. Prioritize a Balanced Diet: Consuming adequate protein and iron-rich foods—such as leafy greens, red meat, and legumes—is vital for sustaining energy.

  2. Establish a Sleep Routine: Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep per night and do not hesitate to take short "power naps" during the day to rejuvenate.

  3. Engage in Light Exercise: Activities like walking, swimming, and prenatal yoga boost circulation and can actually reduce the feeling of lethargy.

  4. Maintain Hydration: Water balance is a critical factor in energy regulation; consistent daily water intake is essential.

  5. Utilize Supplements: Under a doctor's guidance, taking targeted vitamins—particularly iron and folic acid—can prevent the onset of severe fatigue.

When to seek medical advice

Although fatigue is expected, Dr. Alpay warns that severe or persistent exhaustion should not be ignored. If fatigue becomes debilitating or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, expectant mothers should immediately consult their obstetrician to ensure both their health and the baby's development remain on track.
