Modern lifestyle habits are silently harming cardiovascular health

The pressures of modern life—stress, sedentary behavior, and poor dietary choices—are emerging as silent threats to heart and vascular health. According to Prof. Dr. Nevrez Koylan, a Cardiology and Internal Medicine Specialist at Anadolu Medical Center Ataşehir, the human heart beats nearly 100,000 times a day to circulate blood throughout the body. This vital function highlights the importance of protecting cardiovascular health through smart lifestyle choices and, most importantly, diet.

Prof. Dr. Koylan explains that preventing heart disease doesn’t necessarily require radical changes. “Avoiding processed foods, reducing salt intake, and eliminating trans fats from your diet are simple steps that can significantly improve vascular health,” he says. He shares 10 nutrient-rich foods that actively support the heart and circulatory system.

These 10 foods may reduce heart disease risk

Blueberries
Packed with powerful antioxidants, blueberries help protect blood vessels from oxidative stress and improve vascular elasticity. This supports smooth blood flow and enhances overall circulation.

Fatty fish
Fish like salmon, sardines, and mackerel are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s lower inflammation, regulate blood pressure, and help prevent arterial blockages. The American Heart Association recommends consuming fatty fish at least twice a week.

Olive oil
Cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil is loaded with heart-protective monounsaturated fats and polyphenols. Studies show that the Mediterranean diet, especially when enriched with olive oil, lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Spinach
Rich in folate, magnesium, and natural nitrates, spinach helps widen blood vessels and promotes better circulation. Green leafy vegetables like spinach are consistently linked to improved heart health.

Dark chocolate
Dark chocolate containing at least 70% cocoa is a great source of flavonoids, which improve vascular dilation and reduce blood pressure. A small daily portion may be beneficial for your heart.

Walnuts
Walnuts offer plant-based omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E, both of which are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. Research published in Circulation indicates that regular walnut consumption lowers LDL cholesterol and reduces arterial stiffness.

Tomatoes
Tomatoes contain lycopene, a potent antioxidant that helps protect blood vessel walls and may reduce oxidative damage over time.

Oats
Oats are high in beta-glucan, a soluble fiber known to lower cholesterol levels, making them a heart-friendly breakfast staple.

Garlic
With its active compound allicin, garlic promotes vasodilation and helps lower blood pressure naturally.

Green tea
Green tea’s polyphenols have anti-inflammatory effects, help regulate cholesterol, and are associated with a reduced risk of heart attacks when consumed regularly.

Prevention begins with daily choices

Prof. Dr. Koylan reminds us that a balanced and healthy diet remains the foundation for preventing cardiovascular diseases. “These ten foods are powerful allies, but overall lifestyle is key. That means regular physical activity, stress management, quality sleep, and nutritional mindfulness,” he emphasizes.

Koylan adds that revisiting your daily habits can have a lasting impact: “The heart works around the clock. Protecting it should be a lifelong commitment, not a temporary trend.”
