Nationwide Campaign Raises Awareness on Women’s Heart Health
An ambitious public health initiative titled “Women Turn Red” was launched in Ankara on May 23, 2025, aiming to spotlight the often-overlooked symptoms and risks of cardiovascular diseases in women. Supported by Memorial Health Group and spearheaded by the Cardiac Masters surgical team, the campaign urges women to prioritize their heart health amid life’s many responsibilities.
A Silent Killer Hiding in Plain Sight
Speaking at the launch, renowned heart surgeon Prof. Dr. Serkan Durdu emphasized that cardiovascular disease in women tends to progress differently and often more quietly than in men. “In women, symptoms may not be as classic. Instead of chest pain, they may feel fatigue, nausea, or back pain—leading to delayed diagnosis and increased fatalities,” he stated, calling on society to break the silence together.
Adding a cultural dimension, singer and activist Pınar Ayhan highlighted the societal pressures that often push women to ignore their own health. “Women bear many burdens. But their health, especially their heart health, should never be one of them,” she said.
Science-Backed Sessions and Medical Voices
The event featured scientific presentations by leading medical experts Prof. Dr. Mustafa Paç, Prof. Dr. Cengiz Bolcal, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatih Gümüş. Topics ranged from diagnostic methods specific to women, surgical advancements in female cardiac care, to the importance of preventive strategies tailored to women’s physiology.
Capital Markets Board Senior Advisor Buket Salkım also addressed attendees, advocating for women’s awareness and empowerment in all spheres, including their healthcare rights.
Voices Behind the Scenes: The Unsung Heroes of Cardiac Surgery
One of the most impactful moments came from perfusionist Serpil Nalbant, who spoke on behalf of women healthcare workers who play crucial roles in cardiac surgery. “A successful heart surgery isn’t just about the surgeon. It’s teamwork—and women are essential to that team, often behind the scenes,” she noted.
A Year-Long Effort to Paint Awareness Red
The campaign will continue throughout the year with a series of educational events, digital content, seminars, and public engagements. The closing of the launch ceremony saw commemorative plaques presented to speakers and supporters, followed by a group photo with everyone proudly wearing red—symbolizing urgency and solidarity.
