As diabetes rises, foot health becomes a critical battleground

The silent epidemic of diabetes is expanding rapidly in Turkey, fueled by sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary habits, and chronic stress. According to the International Diabetes Federation, the number of diabetics in the country is expected to rise by 50% by 2050, reaching 14.1 million. While much attention is given to blood sugar management, experts warn that diabetes-related complications—particularly in the feet—are often overlooked.

Dr. Rıza Aytaç Çetinkaya, Infectious Disease Specialist at Anadolu Medical Center Hospital, stresses that foot injuries, ulcers, and infections are among the most dangerous complications of diabetes. “Due to nerve damage and poor circulation, diabetics face a high risk of developing severe foot wounds. Choosing the right footwear is not just a comfort issue—it’s a medical necessity,” he stated.

Six features to look for when buying diabetic-friendly shoes

Dr. Çetinkaya outlines six essential characteristics that diabetics should consider when choosing shoes to prevent foot injuries and improve daily comfort.

1. Soft and flexible materials
Shoes should not constrict the foot or apply pressure. Materials such as soft leather or breathable fabric reduce friction and prevent wounds from forming. The upper part of the shoe should be gentle and adapt to the foot's shape.

2. Cushioned, supportive insoles
Many diabetics experience sensory loss in their feet, making it essential for shoes to include shock-absorbing insoles. Orthopedic inserts or gel pads can provide extra protection by redistributing pressure across the foot.

3. Wide, roomy toe box
Toes need space to move freely. A wide front area in the shoe prevents toe compression and reduces the risk of corns, blisters, or ulcers caused by friction.

4. Elevated soles for even pressure
Shoes with slightly raised soles offer greater support and balance, helping distribute weight evenly. Closed-toe shoes are also preferable to protect feet from environmental hazards.

5. Smooth interior with soft seams
Seams that rub against the skin can create open wounds in sensitive feet. Diabetics should choose shoes with a smooth inner lining and minimal internal stitching.

6. Breathability to prevent moisture buildup
Feet that sweat excessively can develop fungal infections. Diabetic shoes must allow airflow to keep feet dry and cool, even if they are fully enclosed.

A crucial component of diabetes management

Foot ulcers are one of the most common causes of hospitalization among diabetics and are often the first step toward more severe complications, including amputation. Proper footwear can help prevent these outcomes.

“Diabetic patients should inspect their feet daily and treat shoe selection as part of their health care routine,” said Dr. Çetinkaya. Preventive measures can be life-changing—and limb-saving.

Anadolu Medical Center Hospital, in collaboration with Johns Hopkins Medicine, provides world-class treatment for diabetes and its complications. Its patient-centered approach integrates state-of-the-art medical care with a strong focus on prevention, particularly in chronic disease management.
