In a significant milestone for the Turkish dried fruit industry, the combined exports of raisins, dried apricots, and dried figs have exceeded $1 billion. This achievement marks an 8% increase from $933 million in the 2022/23 season to $1.007 billion in the 2023/24 season, according to the Aegean Dried Fruits and Products Exporters' Association.

Value-Added Exports Drive Revenue Growth

Despite a 12% decrease in the quantity of dried fruit exports, from 328,000 tons to 290,000 tons, the sector has seen a substantial rise in revenue. This increase is attributed to a 22% boost in the average export price, which climbed from $2.84 per kilogram to $3.46 per kilogram over the past year.

Raisins Lead the Charge

Raisins, a dominant product in Turkey’s dried fruit exports, saw a notable increase in their average export price, nearing $3 per kilogram. Between September 1, 2023, and June 3, 2024, Turkey exported 175,641 tons of raisins, generating $395.4 million. This represents a 19% increase in revenue despite an 11% decrease in export volume compared to the previous period. Mehmet Ali Işık, President of the Aegean Dried Fruits and Products Exporters' Association, highlighted that the average export price for raisins rose from $1,692 per ton to $2,248 per ton in this period.

Dried Figs and Apricots Show Strong Performance

Dried figs, often referred to as "paradise fruits," have also shown impressive performance. From October 6, 2023, to June 3, 2024, Turkey exported 54,876 tons of dried figs, generating $249 million, a 19% increase in revenue despite a 6% decrease in volume. The average export price for dried figs increased by 29%, from $4,240 per ton to $5,458 per ton, with recent figures reaching $6,431 per ton.

Similarly, dried apricots, with their production centered in Malatya but primarily exported from the Aegean region, saw significant growth. Between August 1, 2023, and June 3, 2024, Turkey exported 60,320 tons of dried apricots, bringing in $362 million. The average export price rose by 13%, from $6,027 per ton to $6,785 per ton, approaching the $7,000 mark.

Leading Export Markets

The United Kingdom remains the top destination for Turkish raisins, with exports reaching $93.8 million, a 17% increase. The Netherlands followed with a 29% increase, importing $53 million worth of raisins, surpassing Germany, which imported $40.5 million. Italy, Australia, France, and Japan also showed strong demand for Turkish raisins.

In the dried fig sector, the USA led with a 65% increase, importing $51 million worth, followed by France at $29 million and Germany at $28 million. Dried apricot exports to the USA amounted to $61.3 million, making it the leading market, with France and Germany following closely.

Future Prospects

The TURQUALITY Project, supported by the Turkish Ministry of Trade and executed by the Aegean Exporters' Associations, has played a crucial role in boosting the visibility and exports of Turkish dried fruits in the US market. With the ongoing efforts and increasing demand, Turkey aims to continue its strong performance in the global dried fruit market.

The detailed export statistics underscore Turkey's leadership in the production and export of raisins, dried apricots, and dried figs, reaffirming its pivotal role in the global market.
