We're in the era of Instagram, Snapchat, and similar apps. Millions of women around the globe take photos for these social media platforms, use filters to "enhance" those poses, and retouch imperfections to present themselves as they wish.
But it doesn't stop there. Recently, more women than expected, after using all these social media and smartphone apps, are not content with just that and knock on the doors of cosmetic surgeons. All they want is to adapt the changes they made with smartphone and social media app filters to real life.
In other words, many women are knocking on the doors of aesthetic clinics, asking doctors to "recreate themselves." Contrary to popular belief, the most requested cosmetic procedure is not nose or breast but buttock, especially the big, lifted, and slightly outwardly protruding buttocks known as the Brazilian Butt.
This trend, popularized by curvy celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj, has turned into a serious epidemic among non-famous women as well.
According to data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, since 2000, there has been an increase of over 160% in aesthetic operations in the USA. Brazilian Butt surgery holds a significant place among these procedures.
Just last year, there were 24,000 Brazilian Butt surgeries performed, despite being considered one of the riskiest aesthetic interventions.
Doctors refer to this situation that brings many women to the operating table as "snapchat dysmorphia." These individuals are constantly preoccupied with their bodies, whether there is a flaw or not, believing that it needs to be corrected. And not stopping there, they knock on the doors of cosmetic surgeons.
Aesthetic surgeons warn that Snapchat and Instagram filters, which eliminate all bodily imperfections, increase the rate of developing dysmorphic behaviors in individuals.
With advancing technology, trends also emerge in aesthetic surgery. So much so that the appearance of breasts, nose, or buttocks can change just like changing clothes according to these trends.
One of the most prominent trends of recent times is the Brazilian Butt. This procedure, in which fat is added to and shaped in the buttocks, has become widespread, influenced by the images of celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez on social media.
An aesthetic surgeon, revealing the change in aesthetic trends, says that 20 years ago, they used to remove fat from buttocks, but now they add fat to them.
According to what aesthetic surgeons describe, in Brazilian Butt surgeries, fat taken from another part of the body is injected into the buttocks.
However, this poses a danger as well. This fat injected into the buttocks can reach another part of the body, such as the lungs or brain. This can be the first step in life-threatening issues.
