Raising Awareness About Pancreatic Cancer: Patients Share Stories, Experts Offer Hope
Innovative Approaches Improve Pancreatic Cancer Outcomes
By 2030, pancreatic cancer is projected to become the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Despite its grim prognosis, advancements in medical technology, from artificial intelligence to novel therapies, are turning the tide. Early detection rates are improving, and patients are experiencing enhanced quality and longevity of life.
In an effort to raise awareness, Acıbadem Ataşehir Hospital hosted an event where patients and their families shared personal experiences, and medical experts presented the latest in treatment innovations. The discussion, titled “Hope Blooms with the Right Team in Pancreatic Cancer,” was moderated by journalist Merve Dinçkol. Key speakers, Prof. Dr. Güralp Onur Ceyhan and Prof. Dr. Mert Erkan from Acıbadem University’s Faculty of Medicine, emphasized the significance of multidisciplinary approaches in extending patient survival and enhancing quality of life.
“Innovative Techniques Are Revolutionizing Pancreatic Cancer Treatment”
Prof. Dr. Güralp Onur Ceyhan highlighted the stealthy nature of pancreatic cancer, often advancing without symptoms until later stages.
“Symptoms like indigestion and back pain are frequently misattributed to other conditions, delaying diagnosis until the disease has spread. However, advancements in medical technology now enable patients to live longer and decrease mortality rates,” he explained.
Historically, the five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer was a mere 11%. However, thanks to improved surgical techniques and chemotherapy regimens, survival rates have skyrocketed.
“Our recent advancements have pushed five-year survival rates to 54% after surgery and chemotherapy. This progress gives hope to patients and underscores the importance of cutting-edge treatments,” Prof. Dr. Ceyhan added.
“Multidisciplinary Care Is Key”
Prof. Dr. Mert Erkan underscored the critical role of a team-based approach in pancreatic cancer treatment.
“This is a complex disease requiring a personalized strategy based on the patient’s overall health, cancer stage, and tumor location. Multidisciplinary collaboration ensures the best treatment plan, boosting success rates. For cases where complete remission isn’t possible, improving the patient’s quality of life becomes the priority,” he explained.
