Oral Health Awareness Week: Overcoming Common Dental Mistakes and Myths
Expert Tips to Keep Your Smile Healthy and Bright
As National Oral and Dental Health Week unfolds from November 20-26, experts emphasize that oral hygiene is as vital as the health of any other part of the body. Neglecting dental care can lead to severe systemic health issues, as highlighted by Dr. Arzu Tekkeli, Clinical Coordinator of the Oral and Dental Health Department at Anadolu Medical Center Hospital.
Why Oral Health Matters
Dr. Tekkeli stresses that daily oral care routines should be performed at least twice a day, ideally morning and night. “Neglecting to brush teeth, brushing for less than two minutes, using toothpicks instead of floss, and skipping regular dental check-ups are common mistakes that harm dental health,” she warns. Oral health problems can spread to other areas of the body via tooth roots, causing complications far beyond the mouth.
Building Good Habits Early: Parents’ Role
The foundation of proper oral hygiene starts at home. “Parents play a critical role in instilling oral health habits in children,” says Dr. Tekkeli. She suggests gamifying brushing routines, such as using an hourglass to encourage children to brush until the sand runs out. Introducing children to a dentist early—preferably before any dental issues arise—can prevent fear and anxiety, turning the first visit into a friendly, playful experience.
Avoiding Harmful Practices
For those seeking pearly white smiles, Dr. Tekkeli advises caution against DIY whitening methods. “Avoid using anything other than toothpaste to clean or whiten teeth. Abrasive products can scratch tooth enamel, leading to quicker staining and long-term damage,” she cautions.
The Prevalence of Dental Issues
Common oral health problems include cavities, tartar buildup, gum bleeding, and bad breath. These issues often stem from inadequate oral care. Regular dental check-ups—every six months—can significantly reduce these risks.
Serious Consequences of Neglected Oral Health
Untreated dental conditions can lead to severe complications, including infections that spread from tooth roots to other parts of the body. Dr. Tekkeli explains, “Neglected cavities and oral infections can result in sinusitis, diabetes, tonsillitis, rheumatic diseases, and even bone loss in the jaw. Additionally, systemic diseases like heart and kidney failure, diabetes, and ulcers are closely linked to oral health.”
A Clear Path to Healthy Teeth
Dr. Tekkeli outlines a straightforward oral care routine:
- Flossing: Start with dental floss to remove debris between teeth.
- Brushing: Brush thoroughly for at least two minutes.
- Mouthwash: Finish with an antiseptic gargle for extra protection.
Maintaining these habits, alongside biannual dental visits, can help prevent minor issues from escalating into major health concerns.
