The Importance of Regular Tartar Cleaning

Tartar, if left untreated, can lead to serious infections, warns General Clinical Dentist Dr. Cennet Tuncer Çelik from Egepol Hospitals. Maintaining oral hygiene by brushing teeth regularly is crucial to prevent such complications.

How Tartar Forms and Why It Must Be Treated

Dr. Çelik explains that the food and beverages we consume daily, such as tea and coffee, leave residues and stains on our teeth. Over time, if oral hygiene practices like brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash are neglected, tartar and discoloration develop, causing not only aesthetic concerns but also health issues like inflammation.

“Tartar begins forming when bacteria produce acids that harden over time, creating mineralized deposits on the tooth surface and below the gum line,” explains Dr. Çelik. “Tartar removal involves using specialized tools to eliminate these deposits. After the procedure, patients may experience sensitivity or mild gum bleeding for a day or two. Following the cleaning, we also perform whitening and polishing to restore the teeth’s natural appearance.”

The Consequences of Untreated Tartar

Tartar buildup can cause inflammation, gum pain, bleeding, and even infections. Dr. Çelik emphasizes the importance of preventive care: “A regular dental check-up every six months is essential, even if there are no apparent problems. Visiting your dentist twice a year ensures that potential issues are addressed before they escalate.”

Tips for Maintaining Oral Hygiene

To minimize tartar buildup:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day.
  • Use dental floss and interdental brushes regularly.
  • Incorporate mouthwash into your routine.
  • Avoid excessive consumption of staining beverages like coffee and tea.

Dr. Çelik concludes, “By maintaining oral hygiene and scheduling regular dental visits, you can avoid the complications associated with tartar and enjoy better oral health.”
